| History
of the Series: Swiss Family Robinson ran from September 14, 1975, to March 28, 1976, in a total of 20 episodes. The 50-minute episodes aired on ABC on Sunday nights from 7 to 8 pm in what was a new federally-mandated time slot for family or public service programming. Milner played "Karl Robinson," the father of the ill-fated Swiss family shipwrecked on a South Pacific island, and Pat Delany played his wife "Lotte." In the pilot, the Robinson children were played by Michael-James Wixted ("Fred") and Eric Olson ("Ernie"). Cindy Fisher played "Helga Wagner," a young girl also shipwrecked with the Robinsons. Cameron Mitchell played "Jeremiah Worth," a sailor who had been shipwrecked on the island seven years before the Robinsons arrived. In the TV series, the same cast was used with two exceptions: Willie Aames played "Fred" and Helen Hunt played "Helga." Along with Irwin Allen's special effects like volcanic eruptions, swamp fires, rock slides, glowing elements in swamp decay, etc., the episodes usually had a scientific or history lesson and a moral lesson. For example, scientific lessons included the use of mechanical devices and explanations as to how they worked (such as a fulcrum). History lessons might include American Revolutionary history (1976 was the Bicentennial Year) or an understanding of the advancements made by ancient and indigineous people (as opposed to the Euro-centric view of history). Moral lessons included honesty, sacrifice, caring for other people and animals. All in all, the series was wonderful family programming that was not just entertaining, but thought-provoking on many levels for kids and their parents. It was a shame that the series was short-lived. | ![]() Michael-James Wixted as "Fred" and Cindy Fisher as "Helga Wagner" Swiss Family Robinson (1975 Movie) - screenshot |
